Sydney, Australia

Established in 1788, Sydney is the capital of the state of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia. The city extends from the Pacific Ocean in the east to the Blue Mountains in the west. Two of Sydney’s nicknames are the Harbor City and the Emerald City.
Engravings and cultural sites of Aboriginal Australians are common in the greater Sydney region and date to at least 30,000 years ago. Arthur Phillip, who led the First Fleet of convicts, founded the city as a British penal colony; Sydney was the first European settlement in Australia. Following World War II, the city experienced mass migration, and today over forty percent of the population is foreign-born. China, India, the UK, Vietnam, and the Philippines account for the greatest representation among the foreign-born population.
Education, finance, manufacturing, and tourism are strong facets of Sydney’s advanced market economy. The University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales rank among the top twenty universities worldwide. Major tourist attractions include the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge; the city also has over two million acres of nature reserves and parks for visitors and residents to enjoy.
Sydney offers activities for all ages. A trip to the Taronga Zoo, a whale watching adventure, a harbour cruise with dinner, or a tour in the Blue Mountains combined with a waterfall walk are all unforgettable experiences.
