Denver, Colorado

Denver, the Mile High City, is the capital of Colorado. In 1858, during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush, Denver was a gold mining town which for eons had been home to a wide variety of indigenous people that frequented the South Platte River area. Today, Denver enjoys museums, galleries, attractions, and tours which appeal to every age and interest. Museums and shops lend insight into those who shaped the city: Native Americans, cowboys and cattle ranchers, jazz legends and Beat poets, railroad barons and craft brewers, artists and activists.
Educational opportunities abound in and around Denver. At least thirty-five colleges serve the area, including four 4-year public colleges, nineteen private colleges or universities and five community colleges enrolling over 50,000 students every year.
Visitors and residents alike enjoy a number of diverse entertainment venues. Every March since1984, the Denver March Powwow, one of the largest events of its kind in the United States, celebrates the heritage of Native Americans. Visitors can purchase a variety of artworks, jewelry, pottery, beadwork, and blankets from some of the nation’s finest Indian craftspeople. The city also enjoys a rich African-American heritage: extensive libraries and museums, modern dance performances, music festivals, and stories of jazz greats who played in Denver are available to explore. Latino culture has prominence in Denver as well - over thirty percent of the city’s population is Hispanic. Cinco de Mayo and Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) are two holiday celebrations that attract thousands of visitors each year.
A young and active city, Denver offers sunshine, a thriving cultural scene, and natural beauty.
