Dallas, Texas

The number one visitor and leisure destination in Texas, Dallas enjoys a rich history. Established by John Neely Bryan in 1841, its location on the Trinity River lent it potential as a trading center. By the 1850’s the city became a service center for the surrounding rural areas. With the arrival of railroads in the late nineteenth century, Dallas became a major transportation and trade hub. Oil discovery in the early 1900’s attracted major oil companies, establishing Dallas as a major banking and finance capital. Later, in 1958, Texas Instruments’ Jack Kirby invented the integrated circuit, marking the city’s development as a high tech epicenter; today, Dallas is a major center for technology, healthcare, and telecommunications.
The Dallas Arts District, spanning 118 acres, is the largest art district in the United States; the world’s first convenience store, 7-Eleven, opened in 1927 in Dallas and has its headquarters there today. The Dallas Zoo, opened in 1888, is the oldest and largest zoo in Texas.
Dallas abounds with activities for all. Once completed, the Trinity River Corridor Project will exceed the size of New York’s Central Park by more than ten times. The city is home to several professional sports teams, NASCAR, Indy racing, horse racing, and more than 200 golf courses.
