Situated on the Mississippi River, St. Louis, Missouri, commemorates the westward expansion of the United States in the towering Gateway Arch, the tallest monument in the U.S. Built in the 1960’s, the Arch honors the westward expansion of the United States in general as well as the early nineteenth century explorations of Lewis and Clark. The city is aptly named The Gateway to the West.
Known for its Blues music heritage, St. Louis also offers a unique culinary scene, blending typical Midwestern comfort food with wonderful international flavors. A historic hub for westward expansion, the city is also home to Anheuser-Busch, a major brewery. Free attractions like the St. Louis Art Museum, the St. Louis Zoo, and the Missouri History Museum in addition to the educational museum on the Gateway arch grounds entertain visitors and residents alike.
Sports fans find much to love in St. Louis. The St. Louis Cardinals are known for their dedicated fan base and long history. “Stan the Man” Musial, who played for the Cardinals from 1941 - 1963, held 17 major league records, 29 National League bests, and 9 All-Star game records; he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969. The city’s hockey team, the St. Louis Blues plays in the National Hockey League as part of the NHL’s expansion in 1967. Relatively new to the St. Louis sports scene is the city’s soccer team, the St. Louis City SC, playing in Major League Soccer.
